This article takes a closer look at Marvis Toothpaste, an expensive niche brand available in seven exotic flavors and presented in opulent retro packaging. Here we look at whether it is more effective than competing brands and whether it is worthy of its rather high price tag (view price).
Oral hygiene matters. A whiter smile is not just a sign of youth, vitality and confidence – it frames the gateway to your body!
So, it’s important to protect your mouth not just for cosmetic reasons, but because scientific studies have linked gum infection to more serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease. Consequently, choice of toothpaste does matter, it’s literally the beating heart of any serious oral health regime.
This article will look at:
- What makes Marvis toothpaste unique
- What options are available in the Marvis range
- How, and whether, Marvis toothpaste works
- A bottom-line conclusion on the brand.
What makes the Marvis toothpaste unique?
Mainly its intense flavors, thick texture and its cult status in the menswear sphere.
The yardstick for measuring the success of a menswear brand is whether it’s stocked at Mr Porter, the so-called ‘men’s style destination’. And Marivs is there, appearing first on its toothpaste page.
Its Italian producers market it as the haute cuisine of toothpaste, encase it in lush retro packaging to suggest a more traditional manufacture, and position it at all the right Florentine trade shows.
It will definitely add a touch of class to your bathroom and is available in seven flavors. The most popular being Marvis Classic Strong Mint, which has an intense, long lasting taste.
Originally popular in the 1970s with smokers for its whitening properties, Marvis still claims to excel in giving you an extraordinarily white smile.

How Marvis toothpaste works
Marvis toothpaste aims to deliver a protected white smile and long-lasting fresh breath as well as preventing tooth decay and plaque build-up. So how does it do this?
Like most toothpastes Marvis contains abrasives to ‘exfoliate’ your teeth, lift stains and remove the plaque that can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Marvis uses silica and aluminum hydroxide for this purpose. These ingredients are fairly standard – though experts now consider silica to be quite a harsh abrasive. Which brings us to our next point.
Using abrasives to ‘scrub’ teeth de-mineralizes tooth enamel. So, toothpastes contain ingredients, usually fluoride, to encourage remineralization and thus avoid cavities. But Marvis is fluoride free.
Teeth naturally remineralize over time and Marvis deploy sodium citrate which helps this process by neutralizing acid in the mouth. But using a fairly harsh abrasive that is not offset by the addition of a fluoride substitute could lead to enamel damage – especially if you’re a vigorous brusher!
Marvis toothpaste uses titanium dioxide to whiten your smile. It’s a white pigment with a high refractive index, which basically means it makes your teeth look whiter for a limited time. However, its use in toothpaste is beginning to be linked to cancer.
Lastly, Marvis use Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) as a foaming and cleaning agent. SLS is linked to irritation and mouth ulcers.
All this being said, Marvis has many favorable reviews on Amazon particularly with reference to its intense flavors and the long-lasting fresh feel it generates.
It isn’t that the toothpaste doesn’t work or isn’t enjoyable to use, it’s just that it does the job using ingredients that are either fairly commonplace or, in some cases, questionable in terms of safety. This is despite the fact that Marvis boast they are sensitive to issues around ingredients and are cruelty and gluten free, and vegan, using no ingredients of animal origin.

Marvis toothpaste conclusion
This is an expensive toothpaste which has achieved popularity, especially in the menswear market. It has many favorable reviews on Amazon, particularly regarding the intense flavors, thick texture and fresh feeling it generates.
However, the ingredients it contains are fairly run-of-the-mill and, in some cases, (e.g. SLS) are now being called into question.
If you want a product that will titivate your bathroom and titillate your taste buds – and you are prepared to splash the cash – go for it. You may become one of Marvis’ many satisfied customers. We think you can get similar results from the hello range which is cheaper, more thoughtfully formulated and just as flavorsome.
